The New Zealand thoroughbred industry is mourning the loss of respected horseman Peter Stanaway, who passed away peacefully late last week following a short illness, aged 80.

For decades, Stanaway was a familiar and highly respected figure throughout New Zealand's thoroughbred breeding and racing industry.

A prominent member of staff at Cambridge Stud under Sir Patrick Hogan for more than a quarter of a century, Stanaway was an outstanding horseman and often the man tasked with leading elite-level lots through the sales ring.

“Peter Stanaway was a rough diamond. He was very hard working and an exceptionally good horseman that never panicked under pressure,” said Marcus Corban, long-time manager of Cambridge Stud.

“He led all the very good yearling colts and was a great family man.

“He was little, always had a cigarette in his mouth and a very care-free attitude.

“He had a very good eye for a horse and there were people who used to ask Peter his opinion on what horses he liked.

“There were a couple of big owners in Australia in particular that always used to seek out Pete’s opinion and he was very direct and very honest and he could really pick a horse.”

More recently, Stanaway assisted Graeme and Debbie Rogerson taking horses to trials and race meetings around New Zealand.

“He was a ball of knowledge and drove to trucks to and from the races and everyone loved talking to him,” Corban said.

“He was just one of the good guys and another person that probably didn’t get the recognition that he deserved but he was held in very high regard by all his peers and taught a lot of young people in this industry.”

Having grown up in Matamata, Stanaway worked for Norm Crawford at Willow Stables, father of trainer Karen Fursdon.

He later played a pivotal role in sourcing Fursdon’s Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m) winner Upsetthym from Cambridge Stud, with Sir Patrick Hogan famously gifting the Group One winner to the lease syndicate in return for a bottle of brandy.

Stanaway is survived by his beloved wife, Nevis, and his family, who were at the centre of his life throughout his years in the industry.

A memorial service to celebrate Peter Stanaway's life will be held at Woodside Estate, Woodside Road, Matangi, on Thursday, 2nd July 2026 at 1.00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice Waikato would be appreciated and may be left at the service.- NZ Racing Desk

Antipodean produces APlus performance in Cup

Antipodean (NZ) (Derryn) defied topweight and made light of a rain-affected track to score one of the best wins of his stellar career in the RM100,000 APlus Cup (Metro A – 1600m) at Sungai Besi today.

Always consistent since coming on the scene in 2024, the Derryn galloper gave away at least 5kg (after claims) to his rivals and fought tenaciously to win by a neck.

Banker’s Two Six (Toronado), who has won five of nine runs and beating Antipodean in his last start in May, started odds-on in the seven-horse field.

Banker’s Two Six went to the front on settling down as he loves to do. Pacific Padrino (Street Boss) was second with Antipodean and Always A Gentleman (Put It Back) keeping track of the front two.

Banker’s Two Six led into the straight with Antipodean making a forward move round the bend to be second ahead of Always A Gentleman. The rest of the field were not far behind.

Banker’s Two Six held on to his advantage until the 200m when Antipodean ranged alongside him.

Antipodean beat off a tiring Banker’s Two Six at the 100m and shot clear. But soon after Omniarch (Shalaa), who missed the jump by several lengths, was coming on to the new leader with giant strides.

Antipodean, under superb riding by Bernardo Pinheiro, fought on and won by a neck. Pacific Padrino was 3-1/2 lengths away third.

“After he (Antipodean) got to the front, he looked around a little but when another horse (Omniarch) came charging at us, he knew exactly what to do, which was to fight back,” said Pinheiro.

“Today, he was in his best form and wet track or not, it did not matter.”

“He has always raced at or near his best form but did not have the luck of the running in his recent runs,” said trainer Simon Dunderdale.

“Pinheiro admitted to me that he made some wrong judgements in his last start (finishing fifth to Omniarch).

“People asked me why not put an apprentice on (Antipodean) to claim some weight but Pinheiro knows the horse so well so there is no reason to do that.

“His next big target is the Selangor Gold Cup (1600m) in September.”

Antipodean and Pinheiro finished fourth in the race last year.

Purhcased by Dunderdale for NZ$23,000 at the New Zealand Ready To Run sale, Antipodean has now won 13 of 25 starts. - Selangor Turf Club
