Highview Stud-based Mr Mozart has proved popular with breeders since retiring to his Waikato base and numbers-wise claims the strongest first-season sire representation at this week’s New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling Sale.

Jamieson Park is the majority owner of the son of Snitzel, who has six youngsters in the auction, with selling to commence at Karaka at 11am on Thursday.

Other stallion newcomers are Cambridge Stud’s Chaldean with two weanlings (Lots 3,54), Windsor Park Stud’s Paddington will also be represented by a brace (Lots 116, 141), as will the Grangewilliam Stud-based Hilal (Lots 36,100).

“Jamieson bred and raced Mr Mozart and raced the dam Euro Angel with the Hawkes team and a couple of other Australian friends,” Jamieson Park’s Dylan Ralph said.

“When she retired, she went to Snitzel and got Mr Mozart and we decided to retain and race him.”

Mr Mozart won the Gr.2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m), Gr.3 Doncaster Handicap Prelude (1500m), Gr.3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) and the Listed Exford Plate (1400m) before retiring to Highview where he stands at $6,000 + GST.

“He has served 80 mares in each of his first two seasons, he’s had great support at that price point,” Ralph said.

“In March, Kurtis Gillovic (of Highview) and I went around and saw the majority of foals on the ground and were very pleased, and all the breeders were very complimentary of the stallion and keen to get back to him again this season.

“He’s leaving good, medium size horses and he’s a chestnut horse and running about 30 percent chestnuts to bays.

“Snitzel is currently leading his sixth two-year-old premiership and also leading his fifth general sires’ premiership in Australia.”

As expected, Jamieson principal James Chapman has been a strong supporter of Mr Mozart.

“We’ve got 14 quality mares in foal to him, including Group One winner Faint Perfume, who’s already produced three stakes winners,” Ralph said.

“We’ve also got the dam of Inspirational Girl, also a Group One winner in Australia, and another two stakes producing mares in foal to him and we’ll probably have another 15 mares going to him.

“We really believe in the horse and won’t be slowing down on him.”

Jamieson will offer Mr Mozart’s daughter (Lot 132) in their draft on Thursday while Haunui Farm has three (Lots 5, 25, 83) with one apiece from Brighthill Farm (10) and Leanach Lodge (Lot 78).

“Haunui has been a big supporter of the stallion and it’s always good to have a stud like them in behind you,” Ralph said.

“Our filly is a lovely big, bay individual out of Lipstick Lover, who is an I Am Invincible mare and that Snitzel-I Am Invincible cross has been very good so far.

“That’s why we went out and got a couple of I Am Invincible mares, and Lipstick Lover is a half-sister to Ilovethiscity, a Group One-winning sire.

“She’s a filly with plenty of bone and leg with a good walk and a nice head.”

Jamieson will also present an Ace High filly (Lot 119) out of a half-sister to stakes winner and Group One placegetter Evalina and a Sweynesse colt (Lot 140), whose dam is a sister to the Gr.1 Railway Stakes (1200m) winner Santa Monica, trained by Ralph’s father Stephen.- Paul Vettise

Jake doubles up at Te Aroha

It’s been a lucrative couple of weeks for promising jumper Jake (NZ) (War Decree).

The five-year-old gelding broke through for his maiden victory on the flat at New Plymouth earlier this month and nine days later scored his second hurdle triumph when taking out The Helen Sanson Open Hurdle (3100m) at Te Aroha on Sunday for trainers Peter and Jessica Brosnan.

Under heavy rain, jockey Corey Wiles kept Jake out of trouble at the back of the pack for most of the journey, and the pair still had all before them with 800m to go. Wiles then asked his charge to improve and he quickly swept around several tiring runners, and he set aim at the frontrunners.

Wiles launched an attack five wide when rounding the final bend and Jake entered a duel with Hidalgo (NZ) (Pure Champion) down the home straight. While Jake stumbled over the final hurdle, he regathered himself and ran away in the concluding stages to win by half a length.

“It was a pretty tough effort considering the conditions,” Peter Brosnan said. “He mucked the last jump up, but we were rapt with the result. It was a good, strong effort.”

Brosnan said Jake had thrived since his maiden flat triumph and he was relatively confident heading into Sunday, although he did share concerns about the heavy nature of the track.

“He had come through his race the other day well and he was ready to go,” he said. “We didn’t know how he would handle the real Heavy conditions, but he obviously does, and that was our only concern.”

The Brosnans have now set their sights on bigger targets at Te Aroha later this year with Jake.

“Ultimately, we would like to have him ready for the end of the year at the big Te Aroha meeting, with the (Pakuranga) Hunt Hurdle and Great New Zealand Hurdle, which will be his goals.”

Stablemate Auld Jock (Adelaide) made his first jumping appearance for nearly two years in the same race at Te Aroha but felt the testing conditions and was ultimately pulled up by jockey Bella Oliver.

A placegetter in the 2024 editions of the Great Northern Steeplechase (6400m) and Grand National Steeplechase (5600m), Auld Jock has subsequently been kept to the flat.

While Brosnan admitted he would have liked to have seen more from his gelding on Sunday, he said he has come through the race well and he will now go back chasing.

“He seems fine, he just ran out of puff, so we will have a look at something in a couple of weeks for him,” Brosnan said. “When he was tired, he had had enough, so she (Oliver) did the right thing and pulled him up to save him for another day.

“It would have been good to see him go a little bit better, but it is just a starting point, we just had to start somewhere.

“He will probably go chasing next time.”

Later on the card, Brosnan was proud of the front-running performance of stablemate Jakama Krystal (NZ) (Jakkalberry) in the W L Robinson Livestock Steeplechase (3500m), with the mare sticking on for a gallant third place finish.

“She went super,” Brosnan said. “She tried hard and we are very happy with her.

“She is probably not quite good enough to go against the open horses, so we will probably have to look for another restricted steeplechase somewhere. She is just one stage away from those topline jumpers, but she is an honest, little horse.”- Joshua Smith

Lord Spencer dominant in maiden steeplechase triumph

Lord Spencer (NZ) (Zed) didn’t let the inclement weather rain on his parade at Te Aroha on Sunday, with the exciting jumper running out a dominant victor in the W L Robinson Livestock Steeplechase (3500m).

The eight-year-old gelding was runner-up when making his steeplechase debut at the Waikato track earlier this month, and punters were confident he could go one better three weeks later, backing him into an even money favourite.

Under a patient ride by Lemmy Douglas, Lord Spencer raced towards the rear of the field during the early stages before he gradually inched his way forward throughout the 3500m contest.

Jockey Kylan Wiles served it up to his rivals aboard the Peter and Jessica Brosnan-trained Jakama Krystal (NZ) (Jakkalberry), setting a solid tempo upfront and opened up a healthy gap through the mid stages of the race.

Lord Spencer and Leitrim Lad (NZ) (Tavistock) ate into that lead, with the pair heading the mare with 500m to go and they entered the straight on even terms, but Lord Spencer was still full of running and bounced away to score by 6-1/2 lengths.

Trainer JJ Rayner was pleased with the victory but admitted she was a bit nervous when heavy showers passed over Te Aroha earlier in the day.

“I was a little bit concerned following the big shower of rain we had, which made the track a bit wetter, and I was hoping it wasn’t too greasy, but he got around there as safe as anything and jumped beautifully,” she said.

“In some of those longer races he has a bit of a lull and he goes back, and he kicks off when he feels like it. This time he really got on his bike and got going. He has a good turn of foot at the end when he is asked.

“It was a perfect ride from Lemmy, they get on really well together. He knows the horse inside out, and he couldn’t have ridden him better.”

With a maiden steeplechase victory under his belt, Lord Spencer will now head towards some prestige steeplechase races, with the ultimate aim of heading to Riccarton in August for the Grand National Festival of Racing.

“We just wanted to get through yesterday and see how everything went,” Rayner said. “He travelled home beautifully, pulled up really well and ate everything last night.

“He will head to the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase in a few weeks, and all going well, we will go down to the National,” Rayner said.

Rayner said Lord Spencer is a pleasure to have in the stable and makes getting up out of bed on cold, winter mornings a lot easier.

“He is like the family pet,” she said. “My sister, Claire, does all the riding on him. It is a team effort and everyone likes him, he is an easy horse to do everything with.”

Meanwhile, Rayner is looking forward to heading to Trentham on Saturday with Tutin Cans (NZ) (Alamosa), who will contest the Wellington Hurdle (3200m) after winning his maiden hurdle at the Upper Hutt track a fortnight ago.

“He pulled up really well after his win,” Rayner said. “He is a horse that doesn’t take a lot of racing, and he is not the biggest eater, but he has come through the run really well and eaten really well, for him.

“We are going to push on and head to the Wellington Hurdle on Saturday. It is a big step up but we didn’t really have anywhere else to go.”- Joshua Smith
