Ka Ying Rising in rare air ahead of Everest defence

Trainer David Hayes believes New Zealand-bred superstar Ka Ying Rising (NZ) (Shamexpress) has returned to Australia an even better horse than 12 months ago as he prepares to defend his crown in Saturday’s Gr.1 The Everest (1200m) at Randwick.

The son of Shamexpress is a dominant $1.35 favourite for the A$20 million feature, having extended his remarkable winning streak to 21 races since his triumph in last year’s Everest.

Hayes, who has trained champions on both sides of the Tasman and in Hong Kong, believes the world's highest-rated racehorse belongs in the same conversation as unbeaten Australian legend Black Caviar.

“Ka Ying Rising is a freak of nature, he's a generational horse,” Hayes said.

“Five times in a row he's broken the track record, I've never seen that before, and his ratings tell you he's a better horse now than when he was here 12 months ago.

“I never thought I would see a sprinter as good as Black Caviar until this horse came along.

“So, he's in rare air at the moment. You can have your opinion who's better, that's not the point, but he's as good as her anyway I think.”

Ka Ying Rising completed his final serious workout at Canterbury on Monday morning, working over 1000m on the course proper and quickening over his final 600m in 36.5 seconds.

Hayes was particularly pleased with the gelding's recovery following the gallop and believes his preparation has gone perfectly to plan.

“He had a nice, long, easy canter to warm up and then he quickened from the 600m and was rolling down the straight,” Hayes said.

“His recovery was excellent, he's in a great space, he's lost 10 pounds since the trial and we are really happy with him.

“What the trial has done has got him back into game day mode and brought him on beautifully and that was his strongest piece.”

With rain forecast for Sydney later in the week, the prospect of a rain-affected Randwick surface has been raised as a potential stumbling block for the Hong Kong champion.

However, Hayes is unconcerned, despite jockey Zac Purton expressing some reservations following the gelding's recent barrier trial.

“I know Zac (Purton, jockey), has a query on an Aussie 'wet', I don't. I'm not worried,” Hayes said.

“I think the other day Zac thought he laboured a little bit in the (barrier) trial but I think that was fitness and having a good look around, not being asked, not being pushed, and it was his first hit-out in five weeks.

“The way I read Saturday is we probably need to have a bad day and they need to have a very good day to beat him.”

Hayes is similarly relaxed about Tuesday night's barrier draw, pointing to Ka Ying Rising's exceptional gate speed and versatility.

“He's won from the inside, the middle, the outside. He gets the job done. He's done it 21 times in a row,” he said.

“Obviously closer to the rail is better but I wouldn't be in a panic if he drew wide, he's so fast.”

Hayes identified Tempted, Joliestar and fellow New Zealand-bred sprinter Jimmysstar (NZ) (Per Incanto) as the three biggest threats to his champion.

“Tempted is obvious, she's outstanding and she's brilliant at the track and in the conditions,” Hayes said.

“Joliestar's trial was excellent behind him (Ka Ying Rising) the other day and she has returned from racing very well at Royal Ascot.

“I also like Jimmysstar if it is a hard run race. The blinkers seem to have switched him back on.”

Ka Ying Rising was bred by Fraser and Erin Auret under their Grandmoral Lodge banner. The son of Shamexpress was subsequently sold privately after impressing when winning a jumpout at Levin, before trialling in Australia and embarking on his remarkable career in Hong Kong. - Hong Kong Jockey Club

Kiwi connections shine with five Sha Tin winners

New Zealand-bred and sourced horses enjoyed another successful afternoon at Sha Tin on Sunday, winning five races on the 11-race programme.

Shinyu Kokoroe (NZ), Armour War Eagle (NZ), Jolly Brilliant (NZ), Megastar Heart and Ka Ying Attack (NZ) all saluted, with the latter helping Australian trainer David Hall celebrate his 700th Hong Kong victory.

Hall reached the milestone when Ka Ying Attack scored, becoming the 10th current Hong Kong trainer to reach 700 wins.

“It’s not something you go to work every day thinking about but 700 (wins) sounds good – 800 will sound better,” Hall said.

Ka Ying Attack (Too Darn Hot) has now won six of his 19 Hong Kong starts, having originally been bred by Jamieson Park and sold as a weanling at Karaka for just $30,000.

The son of Too Darn Hot and Refreshing subsequently made his way to New Plymouth trainer Allan Sharrock, for whom he won a trial before being exported to Hong Kong.

Another notable winner was Megastar Heart (Star Turn), who recorded his first Hong Kong success at his fourth start for trainer Caspar Fownes.

The son of Star Turn was prepared for the NZB Ready To Run Sale by Kit Brooks of KB Bloodstock, where he topped the sale at $825,000 when purchased by Solari Bloodstock and Pato Leung.

He subsequently raced in Australia for Annabel Archibald, winning two races, including a Listed event, before being exported to Hong Kong.

Shinyu Kokoroe (Deep Field) added another chapter to his international career when successful for trainer Brett Crawford.

Bred by Waikato Stud, the son of Deep Field and Syrahbeel was sold to KPW Bloodstock for $475,000.

He initially raced in Queensland under the name Steal King, winning twice before being transferred to David Hayes in Hong Kong. He has since joined Crawford's stable.

Armour War Eagle (War Decree) was another winner with a New Zealand racing background.

Bred by Alan Jones and Edwina Morris, the son of War Decree and Enthusabelle was offered by Highden Park at Karaka, where he was purchased by Roger James and Robert Wellwood for $105,000.

Racing as Collateral Damage, he won twice in New Zealand for the Cambridge training partnership before being exported to Hong Kong and joining Mark Newnham.

Completing the quintet was Jolly Brilliant (Ocean Park), who recorded his second Hong Kong victory.

Connections in no rush with hot prospect Zorero

Patience will be key to highly regarded four-year-old Zorero (NZ) (Per Incanto), who remains unbeaten this preparation, realising his full potential.

The Guy Lowry and Leah Zydenbos-trained son of Per Incanto was an impressive winner on his home track at Hastings on the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) undercard following his successful resuming run on the opening day of the carnival.

Zorero is raced by Elsdon Park principal Lib Petagna, whose bloodstock interests are managed by agent Bruce Perry, and has now posted three wins and a runner-up finish from five appearances.

“He’s an exciting horse and we’ll just take him quietly through his grades,” Perry said.

“He’ll maybe have two more runs, he’s still on the up so there’s no need to push him too hard at the moment. Guy and Leah are doing a very good job with him.”

Zorero is out of the Charm Spirit mare Lovecharm, who placed as a two-year-old before she went amiss and is a daughter of Fast Love.

She was trained by the now retired Murray Baker for Petagna and won four races, including the Listed Warstep Stakes (2000m), and ran third in the Listed Metropolitan Trophy (2500m).

Zorero was the odd youngster out when offered by Elsdon Park during the Book 1 session at the 2024 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, where he failed to meet his reserve of $80,000.

“He was the only one we couldn’t sell that year at Karaka,” Elsdon’s General Manager Kerrie Cox said.

“He’s been quite immature and had a few little challenges and that’s why he’s being taking along quietly.

“He’s still so new and we’re lucky he’s got Guy and Leah, they are very patient and do what’s right for the horse to get the results.”

His dam Lovecharm, whose pedigree page also features the multiple Group-winning sprinter Lost And Running, has an Alabama Express colt who will be offered at Karaka next January.

She is due to foal later this month to Per Incanto and a decision will be made whether she visits the Street Cry stallion again or his son and associate Little Avondale Stud sire Little Brose.

Meanwhile, the immediate future of another Petagna-owned representative in Raymond (NZ) (Ardrossan) has been locked in.

The homebred by Ardrossan has placed in two of his three runs for trainer Stephen Marsh, including a last-start third in the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m) after copping trouble out of the barrier.

“He’ll run in the Sarten Memorial (Gr.2, 1400m) and then go down to Christchurch for the 2000 Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m),” Perry said.

Out of the Written Tycoon mare Bridgewater, Raymond is a brother to stablemate Ardalio, winner at Group Three level of the Almanzor Trophy (1200m), Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) and Counties Bowl (1100m) in Petagna’s colours. - Paul Vettise

Breeder’s plan comes to fruition in Livamol

Group One performer Who Knows. Photo: Peter Rubery (Race Images)

Harry Parslow bred Who Knows (NZ) (Redwood) with the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m) in mind, and his plan came to fruition when she placed behind Waitak and Tuxedo in last Saturday’s Hawke’s Bay feature.

Who Knows’ family has a strong association with the race, with her granddam, Cinder Bella, having won it in 2001 when known as the Kelt Capital Stakes. Cinder Bella had a glittering career, which also included victory in the Gr. Captain Cook Stakes (1600m), a race that could also be in the crosshairs for Who Knows.

Cinder Bella had six foals, with her best performer being stakes winner Almost Court, and while her daughter Bello Capello failed to win on raceday, she is leaving her mark as a broodmare through the deeds of Who Knows.

Who Knows was a rambunctious youngster and Parslow decided to send her to a smaller stable in a rural environment. He tapped Wanganui trainer Niall Quinn on the shoulder, with the expat Irishman happy to oblige.

“We have had her for quite a long time,” Quinn said. “Harry bred her and got her broken in. Being by Redwood, she was quite highly strung, so he wanted her to go to more of a farm environment and thought the quieter lifestyle of a smaller stable would suit her, and that is why she came here.

“We are on quite a big farm and have quite a range of paddocks and boxes. They do a lot of farm work, and it is a different environment for their work than a big stable.”

Who Knows was subsequently syndicated amongst a 10-strong group of owners, many of whom were fresh to racing. They race her as the Fast Horses Syndicate, and Who Knows is living up to their moniker.

“A friend of Harry’s set it up and he approached 10 people and said, ‘how would you like to waste $3,000 a year’, and they all jumped in,” Quinn said. “A lot of them are first time owners and they just think this is the easiest game in the world.

“They are a really neat group of owners who were looking for fun and she has given them a lot of that. They have really enjoyed the thrill of it and regardless of what the horse has done, they have had so much enjoyment going to the races and meeting all the different people.

“When they went to Christchurch last year, they made a weekend of it, and they have enjoyed following her around the country and meeting all the various people in racing.”

Prior to Saturday’s Group One placing, Who Knows had won six and placed in four of her 24 starts, including finishing runner-up behind Chase in last year’s Gr.3 Winter Cup (1600m).

Parslow had always held a desire to contest the Livamol Classic with Who Knows, and Quinn decided this season was the right time to have a crack.

“Her breeder, Harry Parslow, was always really keen for years that this was the race he wanted her to go to,” Quinn said. “We targeted the race quite a long time ago.”

Who Knows readied for her first tilt at elite-level with a seventh placed finish in the Gr.3 Metric Mile (1600m) at Trentham last month.

While punters weren’t overly enamoured with that run and gave her little chance in the Livamol, where she jumped a 51-1 outsider, Quinn was more upbeat about her prospects, and he was thrilled to see her storm home late to run third.

“We were confident of a pretty good run,” Quinn said. “She had done a lot of work at home and she had been in work for quite a while. We were pretty happy heading into Saturday.

“We were hoping to be a little more forward but all-in-all we were really happy with the run. She finished it off really strongly.

“She has always been a bit of a time job. We always thought she had a lot of ability, it has just been getting her there physically and mentally. She seems like she could carry on with it now.”

Saturday’s result has given Quinn the confidence to map out further stakes targets, although he has yet to decide what they will be.

“We are looking at possibly Riccarton or Auckland,” he said. “I tried the New Zealand Cup (Gr.3, 3200m) last year, but unfortunately the weather played against us. We were very happy with her going into that, but I don’t think we are going to look at the New Zealand Cup this year. We are looking at keeping her around the 2000m to 2500m races, there are quite a few of them coming up.”

Quinn was rapt with the weekend’s result, and he was quick to pass on kudos to the rest of his small team, including his wife, Emma, and Jade Murray.

Quinn was also pleased to be racing back at Hastings.

“It was really good to get back to Hawke’s Bay,” he said. “We were really pleased for the club and they put on a brilliant day and looked after everyone. It is very tough in the CD, so it is really good to have a bit of positivity there and to race back on a really good track. It is a credit to them.”

While Who Knows will continue to be the stable’s flagbearer, Quinn is looking forward to stepping out stable stalwart Rusty Lane (NZ) (Atlante) over the summer months, and he said this season will likely be the nine-year-old’s last.

“We will race him through the summer and hopefully he pays my tax bill again, like he has for the last few years,” Quinn quipped.

“He has been a good, handy horse that we race with some really good friends. He is not a top horse, but he has been pretty consistent every year.

“He is nine and he works around like a three-year-old still. He is really sound and has good joints, but I would say this will be his last year.” - Joshua Smith

100-1 shot nabs Ashburton Cup

Peachy Keen (NZ) (Reliable Man) caused a boilover when taking out Saturday’s Ashburton Cup (1600m) at odds of 103-1, and now stakes targets await the grey gelding.

The six-year-old son of Reliable Man had failed to fire since winning the Cromwell Cup (2030m) last November, finishing unplaced in his subsequent six outings, including tailing the field home when first-up at Riccarton last month.

However, trainers Len and Lacy Stewart had been pleased with his work at home, having received positive reports from his track riders, and they were hopeful he could turn his form around in the Ashburton Cup.

Their hopes were realised when, under Yogesh Atchamah, he scooted up along the rail to score a long neck victory over Group Three performer Sir Albert.

“Last campaign he didn’t want to be there and this campaign he has come back in and been full of himself, so I put a line through that first-up run and luckily he showed a lot of improvement the other day,” Lacy Stewart said.

“He had been working really well and in his last gallop the jockey came back and said he feels like an open class sprinter.

“He was aided by a beautiful ride and he probably didn’t like the track first-up either, it was wet and an off track, whereas it was a beautiful track at Ashburton.”

Stewart was buoyed by the result and said Peachy Keen will now likely head to the Listed Spring Classic (2000m) at Riccarton on Saturday week, a race won by Sir Albert last year.

“I think he will probably go for the 2000m race at Riccarton, the Spring Classic,” Stewart said. “He would have wanted to have run in the first three (in the Ashburton Cup) to bother looking at that. The second horse (Sir Albert) is a pretty decent horse, and I thought it might run him down, but he kicked.

“He had a very happy bunch of owners.”

The Gr.3 Martin Collins New Zealand Cup (3200m) at Riccarton next month could also be on the cards.

“He still holds a nomination for the New Zealand Cup,” Stewart said. “I am not sure if he will get that distance, but he has come back really strong this time.”

Meanwhile, the stable have five horses nominated for Gore’s meeting on Friday, and Stewart is particularly upbeat about the chances of Sympathique and Miss Harley Quinn.

“Gore is one of my favourite tracks, I was born in Gore,” Stewart said.

“Sympathique loves Gore and Miss Harley Quinn is very well at the moment. Neither of them will mind if it rains a bit because I see they are forecast for a bit of rain.” - Joshua Smith
