Karaka graduate Nonu impresses at Sydney trials
Exciting Karaka graduate Nonu (NZ) (Anamoe) made an immediate impression in his first public appearance, leading throughout to score a dominant three-and-a-half-length victory in Monday’s official two-year-old trials on the Kensington track at Randwick.
The Bjorn Baker-trained colt was purchased for NZ$600,000 from Wentwood Grange’s draft at the 2026 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale at Karaka. He is the first foal out of stakes-winning Pride Of Dubai mare Easifar, who won three races and is a half-sister to South African Group winner Readytogorightnow (More Than Ready).
A son of champion racehorse Anamoe, Nonu travelled strongly under Jason Collett in his 850m heat before putting his rivals away in the straight and stopping the clock at 49.02 seconds.
Jacquinot colt Eagle Jac finished second, with Ole Kirk colt Macho in third.
Baker, who purchased the colt in partnership with Clarke Bloodstock and Ridgmont, admitted they had stretched their budget to secure him but was delighted with what he saw on Monday.
“He’s a really nice horse, he’s got plenty of quality about him,” Baker said.
“We probably went beyond our budget in New Zealand to buy him.
“But Anamoe was a superstar racehorse and I think he’s going to be a superstar stallion.”
