Ellis appointed Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit

Te Akau Racing’s founder and principal, David Ellis, has been appointed a Knight Companion (KNZM) of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2026 King's Birthday Honours, in recognition of his services to Thoroughbred Racing and Philanthropy.
This recognition acknowledges a lifetime dedicated to thoroughbred racing, philanthropy, farming, and service to the New Zealand community. It is a distinction that Sir David and his wife, Karyn Fenton-Ellis MNZM, now Lady Karyn Ellis, and family, feel deeply humbled by.
While today's announcement recognises Sir David's individual contribution, it also reflects the commitment, loyalty and support of Te Akau's owners, staff, industry colleagues, and the wider community who have all contributed significantly to this special journey.
For more than four decades, David Ellis has dedicated his life to an industry that has been his profession, but always his absolute passion. With the thoroughbred at heart, he has helped shape New Zealand thoroughbred racing into a globally respected force through the success of his Te Akau operation. In doing so, he has created opportunities for thousands of owners, staff, trainers, jockeys, breeders and racing enthusiasts along the way.
This knighthood follows a remarkable list of achievements and lifelong honours, including being appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) in 2020, receiving the Outstanding Contribution to Racing Award at the Horse of the Year Awards in 2017, and being inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame in 2025.
However statistics and accolades alone do not fully explain the significance of David Ellis' contribution.
His story begins long before premierships, Group One victories and international success. As a 17-year-old standing at Ellerslie on Easter Monday in 1971, David watched future Melbourne Cup winner Silver Knight win the Great Northern St Leger. It was a moment that ignited a fascination with horses and racing that would shape the rest of his life.
His first winner came in 1978 with a filly named Magnum, who won her third start at Paeroa before later winning at Ellerslie. Four years later, David attended his first New Zealand National Yearling Sale in 1982. That was the beginning of a remarkable journey.
Forty-three consecutive yearling sales later, he has become the most prolific purchaser of thoroughbreds in Australasian history, investing more than $150 million in New Zealand yearlings alone and establishing himself as one of the world's leading judges of thoroughbred talent.
From modest beginnings, he worked numerous jobs, including pouring petrol on his days off, to save enough money to buy his first farm, a purchase that would ultimately lead him to Te Akau. His passion for bloodstock, as well as livestock, has seen Te Akau Stud become one of New Zealand's premier thoroughbred and agricultural properties. That establishment ofTe Akau Racing at Matamata, creating what has become the most successful racing operation in New Zealand history, was also driven by that same passion. Today Te Akau has operations in Matamata, Christchurch and Cranbourne in Australia, and previously in Singapore.
Te Akau has won 16 New Zealand Trainers' Premierships, four Singapore Trainers' Premierships, 12 New Zealand Champion Trainer of the Year titles and four Singapore Champion Trainer of the Year titles. Te Akau-trained horses have won 429 stakes' races, including 106 Group One victories, while the stable now sits on 2,938 domestic wins and continues its march towards the extraordinary milestone of 3,000 New Zealand winners.
The stable has trained 14 winners of the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas and New Zealand 1000 Guineas across the past 21 years, eight Karaka Million 2YO winners, including seven consecutive winners between 2017 and 2023, and remains the only stable to complete the Karaka Million 2YO and Karaka Million 3YO double in the same season, achieving the feat in 2020, 2022 and again in 2025.
Since 2017, Te Akau horses have won 34 stakes' races in Australia, including 15 Group One victories. This is the result of the vision and raw commitment that David Ellis has invested into the industry and its people over many years. Yet for those who know David best, the numbers only tell part of the story.
David Ellis' story wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging the contribution of his wife and successful racing administrator in her own right, Karyn. The combination of their shared passion has seen Te Akau grow into what it is today, with their love of the industry clear to all who know them.
Former New Zealand Bloodstock Chairman Joe Walls MNZM believes David Ellis' greatest contribution may ultimately be measured not in races won, but in people developed:
"David so deserves this honour, for many reasons," Walls said.
"One is that he created and graduated an entire university of racing people, and many of them have gone on to be very successful in their respective racing careers."
Over the years, Te Akau has become a launching pad for some of the most respected names in the industry.
"Champion trainer Mark Walker has had an illustrious training career, employed straight from school by David. Another recent example is Jamie Richards, a young trainer who is now making his path in Hong Kong," Walls said.
"Opie Bosson is another of his great proteges, while Sam Bergerson, Reece Trumper, Hunter Durrant and Ben Gleeson are further examples of the generations of fine young leaders honing their training craft under the Te Akau banner."
The success of those individuals is something David speaks about with as much pride as any Group One victory.
Few organisations in racing can point to a record of developing people quite like Te Akau - former stable apprentices including Daniel Stackhouse, Michael Dee, Samantha Collett and many more. It is a philosophy that David has always championed, and he has always wanted to give young industry talent the opportunity to thrive and develop. That philosophy continues today.

David celebrated his first Group One victory when Cosmetique won the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie in 1986. Few could have imagined at the time that it would become the first of more than 100 Group One victories.
Since then, generations of champions have flown the Te Akau tangerine flag at the highest level - such as multiple Group One winners Melody Belle, Avantage, Probabeel, Darci Brahma and Imperatriz, while countless other elite performers have helped to establish Te Akau among the Australasia's leading racing operations.
Another achievement has been his remarkable success in identifying future stallions, with horses such as Darci Brahma, Burgundy, Embellish, Xtravagant, Sword Of State, Cool Aza Beel, Noverre, Move To Strike and Return To Conquer all helping shape future generations of Australasian thoroughbreds.
Australian Hall of Fame trainer Gai Waterhouse's first Group One winner came courtesy of Te Akau Nick, a horse purchased by David and later entrusted to the legendary Australian trainer. That victory in the Gr.1 Metropolitan Handicap was not only a defining moment in Gai's career, but also one that helped fuel David's belief that New Zealand horses, New Zealand people and New Zealand racing could stand proudly on the world stage.
Walls believes his contribution extends far beyond the success of his own business.
"David almost single-handedly held the New Zealand National Yearling Sales together over the last 20-plus years, and I was there to see it all happen; without him, it would have been in a sorry state.
"There has been no one like him on the buying bench at the sales over the past 40 years.
"Through COVID, he practically held the sale together on his own. David kept buying horses even when I thought there was no need, but he was driven to do so."
Those comments underline David Ellis' unwavering commitment to the New Zealand breeding industry and his belief in its future. Whether supporting breeders, investing at the sales, serving voluntarily on industry boards or promoting New Zealand-bred horses internationally, his influence has extended well beyond Te Akau's own success.
Over the years David has served on the board of the Waikato Racing Club, including five years as Chairman, earning Life Membership in recognition of his contribution. He also served on the board of the New Zealand Racing Conference during its transition to New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing and on the board of New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing. Beyond racing, David's contributions to farming and philanthropy have also been significant. He and Karyn contribute to numerous community initiatives and charities and serve as proud Patrons of EquiPotential.
Walls reflected on the scale of that achievement.
"Those of us who have closely observed the growth of Te Akau Racing didn't realise just how significant and important David's dedication to the thoroughbred industry would become, and how he could sustain the positive impact for so long and create such an impressive legacy,” he said.
"He has done a hell of a lot of good things for the industry, and a lot also outside of racing, and he has done a lot for farming, building his farm up from nothing - creating a model farm from meagre beginnings - he wasn't born into it and did it all on his own from scratch."
Today, Te Akau Stud stands as one of New Zealand's premier farming and breeding properties.
As we, the racing industry and New Zealand as a whole, celebrate Sir David Ellis and this richly deserved honour, it is difficult not to reflect on the extraordinary journey that has brought him to this moment.
From a young man captivated by horses at Ellerslie, to a Hall of Fame inductee, and now a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, David Ellis' story is one of vision, determination, resilience and an unwavering love of thoroughbred racing.

Alderslade recognised in King’s Birthday Honours

Auckland Thoroughbred Racing chairman Doug Alderslade has been recognised in the King’s Birthday honours for his services to the racing industry and will become an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
“It has been a bit overwhelming, but I am appreciative and humbled by it all,” Alderslade said.
“I was obviously delighted to accept, more on the part of the whole industry and the team at Ellerslie rather than seeing it as being a particular acknowledgement of my efforts because it has been a huge team effort by everybody concerned.”
A member of the Auckland Racing Club board since 2003, Alderslade became chairman of the club in 2017, and he played a key part in the amalgamation of the Auckland Racing Club and Counties Racing Club into Auckland Thoroughbred Racing in 2021 and was subsequently appointed chairman of the joint venture.
In his tenure as ATR chairman, Alderslade has overseen arguably the most transformative years in the club’s history, with Ellerslie becoming a world-class racecourse with the construction of its StrathAyr track and new stabling area, as well as securing the club’s financial future with the sale of the Ellerslie Hill.
Alderslade has been associated with the Auckland club for more than 50 years, and said he is proud of what his team has achieved in his time at the helm.
“I have been a member (of the Auckland Racing Club) from 1972, and I joined the board in 2003,” Alderslade said. “That was when we had a whole issue when we sold Takanini and what we were going to do with the proceeds, and basically the whole board resigned and we had new elections. Lyn Stevens was the new chair when I joined the board in 2003.
“The first decade and a half of being on the board was business as usual. I think when the issues the industry is now facing became more obvious, as a board we really started to think about what we needed to do and could do to take the industry into a new era.
“That was when the big decisions were being made about the track, the installation of the new StrathAyr, and then the selling of the hill, which was obviously a difficult decision bearing in mind the history of the hill.
“We just felt from an economic point of view, we really needed to inject some optimism into the future of the industry and that was the way we felt we could do it – by producing a first rate racing surface and being in the fortunate position as a consequence of being able to offer really good stakes for trainers and owners, and everybody concerned in the industry.
“With Pukekohe, we thought that there was a need to combine with them and have them involved with the whole process and get Mark (Chitty) and his team onboard. They were extremely receptive and worked really well with us to achieve that end. It has been a bit of a journey over the last six or seven years to get to the point where we are at at the moment.
“When you set out on these sorts of projects you look where you want to end up. In incremental terms, first it was the stabling block, which was the first project off the block. It is a wonderful setup for the horses and trainers. The track was the next thing and building up the investment fund that we have currently got to be able to fund the stakes has been a big part of it.”
While proud of what he and his board have delivered, Alderslade said the job isn’t complete yet.
“We have still got projects at Ellerslie and Pukekohe we are looking at, so we are not finished the process,” he said. “I think it has been gratifying for all of us to see the results of what we have achieved has been well received by the industry and obviously at a time where the industry is going through quite a few changes, it is nice to have some bright spots on the scene.”
One of those bright spots has been Champions Day, which has quickly become New Zealand’s biggest day in racing, and the home of New Zealand’s first thoroughbred slot race – the $4 million NZB Kiwi (1500m).
“That has been an iteration that has developed,” Alderslade said. “We started off with that Carnival being three days and we are down to one. It is like anything in the industry these days, you have just got to adapt and move on to what is going to work going forward.
“History is a wonderful thing and everyone should acknowledge it, accept it and enjoy it, but at the same time we have got to do things that are going to appeal to the wider public and ensure that the people that are contributing to the industry are able to get a good return for their efforts and input.”
While racing has been a big part of Alderslade’s life, it wasn’t until the English native immigrated to New Zealand as a teenager that he became involved in the sport.
“I emigrated from England to New Zealand when I was 15, and I had nothing to do with racing in England,” he said.
“I ended up at Feilding Agricultural High School and the guy in the class that was designated to look after me, he and his father were avid racing fans, so in the late sixties I used to trail along behind them to places like Awapuni, Wanganui, Woodville, and there was a Feilding track in those days. So once or twice a month I went off to the races.
“We both came up to university (in Auckland) to do law, and we followed on from there.”
Alderslade would go on to forge a successful career in law, becoming a litigation partner at Chapman Tripp, but racing continued to play a key part in his life, with Alderslade enjoying plenty of success as a Group One-winning owner and breeder.
“I met my wife to be, and her sister-in-law is Moira Murdoch, and we started racing a few horses,” Alderslade said. “The first horse we raced was Solvit, who won the Cox Plate (Gr.1, 2040m) and three Group Ones, so that got us involved. We raced horses with Moira for 20-odd years.
“I am good friends with Alan Galbraith at Rich Hill, so we joined up with Alan, and we started breeding a few here and in Australia, and it snowballed from there.
“The first mare that we bred from, a mare called Gemscay, was the mother of Penny Gem, who won a Group One, so I hit the jackpot with the first foal I bred.”
Alderslade has also experienced plenty of success as an owner in Australia of late, highlighted by Group One winner and now sire Exceedance.
“Latterly I have been racing a few in Australia through a link with Vinery Stud. It has been an accumulation and expansion,” Alderslade said.
“Through the Vinery connection, I am an owner and still have an investment in Exceedance, who won the Coolmore Stakes in 2019, and he is now standing at stud at Vinery.”
Alderslade has garnered plenty of success and enjoyment from racing and he has been delighted to give back to the sport he loves, something he plans to do for a few years to come, with the help of his board.
“The key to it in the last five to 10 years has been the board that we have got,” Alderslade said. We have got a very good, balanced board that has got a wide range of skills.
“I can’t do everything, nobody can, but when you can rely on a team like that and we are all working for the same purpose, it makes life a lot easier.
“We have still got a bit of work to be done at Ellerslie to get to a point where we feel we have completed our master plan.”
While Ellerslie and Pukekohe are the club’s key focus, Alderslade said they are also working towards a bright future for racing throughout New Zealand.
“We have always said from the beginning that we are part of an industry, and we can’t survive on our own,” he said.
“We are looking forward to trying to contribute to what is going on at the moment to ensure that the footprint and the foundations for the industry going forward are on good, strong footings.
“That is going to come out of Project Stamina and the advisory group’s recommendations, whatever they are.” - Joshua Smith, LOVERACING.NZ News Desk
Patch Of Stars shines bright to continue meteoric rise in Sha Tin Vase

Riversley Park Ready to Run graduate Patch Of Stars (All Too Hard) continued his quick march through the grades with a game performance to deny Raging Blizzard (NZ) (Per Incanto) and claim the Gr.3 Sha Tin Vase (1200m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.
It was a fourth win of the season for the All Too Hard galloper, who began his remarkable sequence 13 months ago when securing a Class Four contest off a rating of just 50.
Since that success, he had rattled off another five wins and climbed 51 rating points heading into Sunday and this was undoubtedly his biggest step forward yet with a clinical performance to deny a trio of rivals, who have been tangling with Ka Ying Rising (NZ) (Shamexpress) in recent starts.
Confidence was high in the Manfred Man Ka-leung-trained four-year-old, who was backed from $5 into $2.85 and his legion of supporters never had much worry.
Karis Teetan managed to get his mount beautifully settled on the rails in fifth, stalking an even pace set by Stellar Express (Zoustar). As the race began in earnest in the straight, Teetan found himself bottled up with nowhere to go, with what looked to be plenty of horse underneath him.
The gap eventually appeared at the 300m and his willing partner needed no second invitation, slicing through between Sky Trust (So You Think) and Tomodachi Kokoroe (Written Tycoon) and quickly taking the lead at the 200m.
Raging Blizzard began his charge down the middle of the track and looked a significant danger as the post loomed, but Patch Of Stars dug deep and fended him off by a short head, much to the delight of Man’s assistant trainer Wing Ip-hang.
“He was really good, the horse is super honest and the jockey rode him really well. The pace was good for the horse, before he was struggling a bit in the back but he had a good draw today so he performed really well,” Wing said.
“He’s a good horse in the morning, he relaxes well. I ride him every day and he’s been getting better and better. He’s still young and I think he can improve. I was a little bit confident watching; I’m really happy.”
It was a second win in the race for jockey Teetan, who was drafted in to ride Ka Ying Rising to success in 2024.
Although it would not have been quite the same level of acceleration, Teetan was quick to praise his mount, while also thanking Man for the chance spare.
“It’s nice to pick up a nice ride in this race. When I looked at the form, I thought it was gonna be a nice ride in this race with the weight, with the draw,” Teetan said.
“I actually got a smooth passage today and he was very well through the week when I worked him and when I pressed the button today, he responded really well.
“All the credit to Manfred and his team and thanks to the owners for supporting me.”
It was a very successful day for New Zealand-bred and Karaka sourced horses at Sha Tin with six further winners on the card.
Riversley Park showed why they are one of the best in the business a second Ready to Run sale graduate, Aeroinvincible (NZ) (Per Incanto), winning the Hakka Cup (1400m).
Dual New Zealand Bloodstock graduates Ka Ying Lightning (NZ) (All Too Hard) and Family Jewel (NZ) (Time Test) were also winners.
Ka Ying Lightning, bred by Pencarrow Thoroughbreds, won the Mei Zhou Association Cup (1000m). Initially sold from Pencarrow’s 2024 Book 1 draft for $120,000, he was later sold to John Foote Bloodstock for $200,000 at the Ready to Run sale from the draft of KB Bloodstock.
Family Jewel, winner of the General Association Heyuan Societies Cup (1600m), was first sold from the Book 2 draft of Little Avondale Stud for $52,500 and sold later that year from the draft of Woburn Farm for $75,000.
Other Karaka graduates to win were Oldtown (NZ) (Territories) – from Haunui Farm’s 2023 Book 2 draft, and Ka Ying Attack (NZ) (Too Darn Hot) – from Jamison Park’s 2022 Weanling Sale draft.
Double Win (NZ) (Burgundy) won the Federation of Huichow Associations Cup (2000m). - NZ Racing Desk
Waller turns to Melhams ahead of Oaks

Chris Waller has turned to the Melhams as he strives to add to his imperious Group One record this season in Saturday's Queensland Oaks.
Australia's leading Group One trainer will have three runners in the A$700,000 event, Panova (Trapeze Artist), Chispa (NZ) (Savabeel) and Soverato (NZ) (Vadamos), with the first two in need of new pilots after champion rider James McDonald partnered both in their final lead-ups.
McDonald will miss this Saturday's Eagle Farm meeting due to a suspension incurred in Hong Kong on May 24.
Panova and Chispa are fighting out favouritism for the 2200-metre event and will be ridden by Ben Melham and Jamie Melham respectively with Ryan Maloney to take the ride on Soverato.
Panova is striving to emulate another Waller-trained filly, Egg Tart (Sebring), as the only horse to complete the Australasian Oaks/Queensland Oaks double and Waller has given her the same lead-in as Egg Tart.
The daughter of Trapeze Artist, who had three runs in Sydney prior to the Australasian Oaks, has not started since her win in that 2000m Oaks on April 25 with Waller electing to trial her in Sydney in preference to a lead-up run in Brisbane.
"She's come out of the South Australian Oaks win in good shape," Waller said.
"We could have run in her the Doomben Roses but we chose not to. Again, (because of) travel.
"She's travelled to Melbourne, she's travelled to Adelaide, she's travelled back to Melbourne, she's travelled back up to Sydney, she's travelled (to the Gold Coast).
"That's a lot of travel, so we chose not to run her again and she's well. It was a great win last start and 2200 metres should be no problem."
Waller's two other Queensland Oaks runners did come through the Gr.2 The Roses (2000m), with Chispa finishing second to Fireball Miss (Bivouac) and Soverato sixth.
It was a drop back in trip for Soverato, a daughter of Vadamos who finished fifth in the Gr.1 ATC Oaks (2400m), but the first try and 2000m for Chispa, who will be having the seventh start of her debut campaign this weekend.
Waller doesn't have any doubts about the daughter of Savabeel and the Galileo mare Scintillula handling the step up to 2200m in the Oaks.
"She didn't have much luck the other day, but it was good to see her settle well and do all the little things right," he said.
"She should get 2200 easily."
Chispa is owned and bred by Pencarrow Stud’s Sir Peter Vela.
Soverato races in the OTI silks following their purchase of the filly after an eye-catching second at the Waipa trials for Simon and Katrina Alexander. Simon and Katrina had purchased her under their Kasa Bloodstock banner from Rich Hill Stud’s draft on the 2024 National Online Yearling Sale. - NZ Racing Desk
Maiden win just what the doctor ordered

On a blustery day that ultimately led to the abandonment of racing at Te Aroha on Monday, homebred juvenile gelding Tardis (NZ) (Time Test) broke through for a deserved victory in the Mlaadi Laurich (Young Laurich’s) Maiden 1150 for trainer Daniel Miller.
Bred and raced by Miller’s parents, John and Maree, Tardis made his debut in the Listed Counties Challenge Stakes (1100m) at Pukekohe last November, where he finished last, but he took plenty of benefit from a spell and returned with renewed vigour when placing over 1200m at Matamata last month.
Buoyed by that effort, Miller took plenty of confidence into Monday’s meeting, which was reflected in Warren Kennedy’s ride.
The senior hoop was positive out of the gates aboard the gelding, pushing him forward to take the lead, with race favourite Just The Berries (NZ) (Per Incanto) sitting on his flank.
The pair entered a duel down the home straight, opening up several lengths on their rivals, and Tardis continued to maintain his advantage, proving too tough in the end to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Raymond, who flew home late to nab second by a nose over Just The Berries.
“We definitely had plenty of confidence, he worked with Sneaky Cyclone on Thursday and Sneaky couldn’t get past him,” Miller said.
“Today is the first time where he has found the front nicely and he has always been a horse that when he does get to the front, he doesn’t like horses getting past him.
“The favourite has shown plenty at the trials, but he (Tardis) has got that raceday experience and he has done a lot of work for a two-year-old, so he is quite mature, and I knew he would be in for the fight.”
Miller has plenty to contemplate over the coming days, with several options for Tardis over winter, while spring three-year-old targets are also in the mix.
“He definitely can go on a wet track, he has worked well on a very wet track,” Miller said. “He can go on top of the ground as well so whether we just look after him for the spring we will just see.”
With strong gusts throughout the meeting, the wind picked up prior to the start of race five, blowing over several sections of the running rail, and despite the best efforts of track staff, they were in vain, and the decision was made to abandon the meeting citing safety concerns.

“The wind has picked up throughout the day,” stipendiary steward Brady Jones said. “A section just past the winning post, prior to the start of race five and horses being loaded, fell over.
“The track crew did attempt to fix that but they weren’t having much luck and as soon as they finished that another section fell over near the 100m.
“They went to attend to that and the section that they had just fixed fell over again, so we brought the riders back from the start, we spoke with all the riders, and the decision was made to abandon the meeting.
“With how strong the wind is, you couldn’t guarantee that the rail wasn’t going to fall down throughout the rest of the day, so I think it was a fairly straightforward decision unfortunately.” - Joshua Smith, LOVERACING.NZ News Desk
