Raging Blizzard heads Sha Tin quintet with New Zealand connections

New Zealand-bred sprinter Raging Blizzard gained a deserved stakes breakthrough in Sunday’s Gr.2 Premier Bowl Handicap (1200m) at Sha Tin, heading a successful afternoon for horses with New Zealand connections.

The Jamieson Park-bred gelding produced a powerful late finish to claim the HK$5.35 million feature for trainer John Size and jockey Brenton Avdulla, while four graduates of New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale also struck on the programme.

Speedy Power, Ka Ying Lightning, Megastar Heart and Packing Glory delivered another reminder of the sale’s influence in Hong Kong, where its graduates won 15 percent of all races last season.

Raging Blizzard carried topweight of 135lb and settled near the rear before unleashing his challenge to catch Ka Ying Attack, who had established a three-length advantage at the 300m.

The seven-year-old prevailed by a head, with Crimson Flash a neck away in third, stopping the clock at 1:07.71 after covering his final 400m in 22.02 seconds.

The victory was his seventh from 30 starts and lifted his earnings to HK$26.24 million, rewarding his consistency against Hong Kong’s leading sprinters.

“It's a bit of justice for him — he's tried so hard in all his races. He's been unlucky running into some very nice horses constantly, but eventually, he's rewarded for his consistency. So, it was quite satisfying to see him win this race,” Size said.

“It was probably a special event for a lot of the connections, so we're quite happy and relieved for the horse to win a race and for the owners, who have been sort of believing in him for such a long time.

“He's got a lovely temperament. He's in beautiful condition most of the time and he's sound and he does very well. He's a pleasure to work with.”

Bred by Jamieson Park, Raging Blizzard is by Little Avondale Stud’s Per Incanto out of Perfect Beat.

Runner-up to Ka Ying Rising in last year’s Gr.1 Hong Kong Sprint (1200m), Raging Blizzard will again target the December feature. His next assignment is the Gr.2 Jockey Club Sprint (1200m) on November 22, when Ka Ying Rising is also scheduled to return to Hong Kong competition.

“He's got no options, so he'll go there and it's a stepping stone to the second Sunday in December,” Size said.

Avdulla was delighted to see one of his favourites secure a stakes success.

“There are two horses that, every season, they keep turning up for me. They don’t win very often but him and Beauty Joy, they just turn up every season and run against the best and I said to connections that ‘I think it’s his turn today’,” he said.

“I thought it was the easiest race he’s been in, carrying the 135lb, second-up and 1200m — I thought today was D-Day for him and we got the right run through and he was able to get the job done. To actually win a race and a Group, it’s very special.”

Earlier, exciting New Zealand-bred four-year-old Ka Ying Lightning maintained his unbeaten record with his third victory from as many starts.

The David Hall-trained gelding won the Class 3 1000m contest under Andrea Atzeni, recording a slick 56.16 seconds.

Bred by Pencarrow Thoroughbreds, the son of All Too Hard and Floating Heart was initially sold through Pencarrow Stud’s Karaka 2024 Book 1 draft for NZ$120,000. KB Bloodstock subsequently sold him for NZ$200,000 at the 2024 NZB Ready to Run Sale.

His continued emergence provides a timely pedigree update for his Hello Youmzain half-brother, catalogued as Lot 256 in the 2026 Ready to Run Sale.

Another graduate of the 2024 sale, Speedy Power, opened his Hong Kong winning account for trainer James Cummings and jockey Zac Purton in a Class 4 1200m event.

Woburn Farm sold Speedy Power for NZ$150,000 to Hong Kong buyer Chun Wai Choi at the 2024 NZB Ready to Run Sale.

The Ready to Run success continued when Megastar Heart set a Class 3 record of 1:07.75 in winning over 1200m for trainer Caspar Fownes and jockey Luke Ferraris.

Megastar Heart topped the 2023 NZB Ready to Run Sale when KB Bloodstock sold him to Pato Leung for NZ$825,000.

New Zealand-bred Packing Glory then added another record-breaking performance, clocking 1:20.51 to win the Class 3 1400m event for Ricky Yiu and apprentice Nichola Yuen.

Bred by Inglewood Stud, the son of Harry Angel and Monrecour was offered through the North Canterbury nursery’s draft at Karaka 2023 Book 1. He subsequently fetched NZ$800,000 through Kilgravin Lodge at the 2023 NZB Ready to Run Sale, the equal second-highest price of the auction behind Megastar Heart.

Packing Glory also won a barrier trial at Waipa in October 2024 before embarking on his Hong Kong career. - NZ Racing Desk

Coniston claims Sarten Memorial

Coniston (NZ) (Wootton Bassett) got his Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) campaign back on track at Te Rapa on Labour Day when claiming the Gr.2 James & Annie Sarten Memorial (1400m).

The son of Wootton Bassett wasn’t wanted by punters following his last placed finish over 1400m at Hastings a fortnight ago, with the market dominated by Te Akau Racing’s unbeaten colt System Of Play (Ole Kirk).

Coniston was only fair away, but jockey Joe Doyle was able to navigate his charge into a handy position three back in the running line behind last-start stakes winner Justin Case (NZ) (Banquo), with the Andrew Forsman-trained Lassified (Stay Inside) setting a hot tempo upfront.

Lassified and Whistlejacket (NZ) (Proisir) continued to put the pedal to the metal and entered the home straight two lengths in advance of Justin Case, with Coniston a further three lengths off the pace. Justin Case soon loomed up alongside the leaders before hitting the lead, and Coniston began his late surge.

Cambridge Stud filly Joyeuse (NZ) (Sword Of State) hugged the rail and presented as a late challenge, but Justin Case continued to rally, and Coniston only just managed to nab him in the shadow of the post to win by a head, with 1-3/4 lengths back to Joyeuse in third.

Andrew Scott, who trains Coniston in partnership with Lance O’Sullivan, said they ruled a line through his last start, and he was rapt to see him bounce back and notch his first stakes win on Monday.

“You look at the sectionals (last start), and he was the second quickest in the last 600m, and it was just a non-event. It was an expensive track gallop unfortunately,” he said.

“Today we wanted to be positive. He wasn’t brilliant away, but he recovered into a rhythm. He trained really well coming in.

“It is pleasing for the team, they put him away through the winter when we were tempted to run, and they are getting the spoils now.”

Scott believes Coniston will handle the step up to a mile in next month’s New Zealand 2000 Guineas at Riccarton.

“Hopefully he cracks on down at Christchurch, he has got a good, long gallop in him and he seemed to handle the Good ground here today,” he said.

“If it was a mile today, he would have run it out strong by the looks of it. He will only improve with a good hit-out today. It is the first time he has hit top gear and made to do it and bite his bottom lip and keep going. There should be a good bit of improvement out of today.”

Doyle also believes Coniston will thrive over 1600m, and while he has several options heading into the Riccarton Classic, he said Coniston is now in pole position.

“He felt like he would eat the mile there today. I think he will improve a little bit off it too. He got the right run today,” Doyle said.

“It was bad tactics last time, they went slow and he pulled hard. I said to Lance and Scotty before getting on him that I didn’t want to have an argument with this horse today, and it worked out lovely.

“There are a few balls in the air but it’s very hard to get off him (for the 2000 Guineas) I would say.”

Scott was also pleased with the way stablemate Rip Tide finished into fourth and said he will also head down to take his place in the 2000 Guineas.

“He made up a lot of ground, which is hard to do today, and he looks like he is on track too,” Scott said. “There are a couple of nice chances hopefully going down in three weeks’ time.”

Following Monday’s win, Coniston has shortened into a $5 equal favourite for the 2000 Guineas, alongside the Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained Excite (Wootton Bassett), who won over a mile at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Former 2000 Guineas favourite System Of Play, who finished sixth in the Sarten Memorial, has now drifted in the market from $3.50 to $6, while Rip Tide (NZ) (Ocean Park) has shortened into $10. - Joshua Smith

With Grace seals NZ Cup berth

With Grace returns victorious following the Baker Tilly Staples Rodway 2100 at Te Rapa on Monday. Photo: Kenton Wright (Race Images)

South Auckland mare With Grace (NZ)(Ocean Park) secured her berth in next month’s Gr.3 Martin Collins New Zealand Cup (3200m) at Riccarton when extending her winning sequence to four with victory in the Baker Tilly Staples Rodway 2100 at Te Rapa on Labour Day Monday.

From her outside draw in the seven-horse field, With Grace was taken straight to the back by jockey George Rooke, who was happy to stalk his rivals for most of the journey. Turning for home, Rooke presented his charge out wide and she showed a good turn of foot to run over the top of her rivals to win by 1-1/4 lengths over Keeper’s Heart (Saxon Warrior), with a further three quarters of a length back to race favourite French Thinker (So You Think) in third.

Trainer Kylie Hoskin admitted to being slightly anxious during the running, with her charge out the back of the pack, but she was relieved to see her storm home late to score a comfortable victory.

“I was starting to sweat a bit, I thought George was being pretty patient back there,” Hoskin said. “She has shown that she has got a great turn of foot on a Good track and she caught them up.

“Her sectionals home are so good and she is very tractable.”

The daughter of Ocean Park has been faultless this season, carrying New Zealand syndicator Go Racing’s colours to victory in all four of her starts, and Hoskin is hoping she can continue her golden run in the New Zealand Cup.

“She had a nice blow at Ellerslie in her gallop last weekend, so she will definitely improve from this because it has been a bit of a break,” Hoskin said. “She will be spot on for the New Zealand Cup.”

Following Monday’s win, With Grace has shortened into a $6 joint favourite for the New Zealand Cup, alongside Rosso (Camelot) and Tajanis (Australia), the latter another Go Racing representative who has recently arrived at Hoskin’s Byerley Park stable.

The Charlotte Littlefield-trained gelding is no stranger to New Zealand, having finished runner-up in the last year’s Gr.2 Auckland Cup (3200m) when trained by Chris Waller.

“I have got Tajanis in the stable as well and I will be taking the two of them down to Riccarton for the New Zealand Cup,” Hoskin said. “He is over here from Aussie and is another Go Racing horse trained by Charlotte Littlefield. We will have a nice pair to take down there and duel it out.” - Joshua Smith

Soverato set for Matriarch Stakes challenge

New Zealand-bred mare Soverato (NZ) Photo: ultimateracingphotos.com.au

New Zealand-bred mare Soverato (NZ) (Vadamos) will look to continue her rise through the grades when she tackles the Gr.2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on November 7.

The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old heads towards the Group Two contest following an impressive victory in Saturday’s Gr.3 Tesio Stakes (1600m) at Flemington, where she finished strongly under Damian Lane to defeat Shockletz (NZ) (Shocking) by a long neck, with Ocean Bay (NZ) (Vanbrugh) a further short-head away in third.

The daughter of Vadamos has continued to improve throughout her preparation, with OTI Racing’s Terry Henderson confident there is more to come from the progressive mare.

“Chris always said when she was a three-year-old that there was plenty to come when she matured,” Henderson said.

“Her last two runs had been very strong, so there was a bit of confidence going into today.”

Henderson indicated the Matriarch Stakes was the logical next target, with Soverato having had just three starts this preparation.

“Chris will make that decision but because she’s only had the three runs, she’s certainly not over the top yet,” he said.

Lane was equally complimentary following her Tesio Stakes success, believing the mare had been building towards a performance of that calibre.

“She has been on an upward trajectory throughout her career, particularly this preparation and had been building to a performance like Saturday's,” Lane said.

Soverato was bred by Rich Hill Stud and offered through the 2024 NZB National Online Yearling Sale on Gavelhouse Plus, where she was purchased by Katrina and Simon Alexander’s Kasa Bloodstock for just $10,000.

She subsequently caught the attention of OTI Racing after finishing an eye-catching second in a trial at Waipa in May 2025 for the Alexanders, prompting the Australian ownership group to secure her. - NZ Racing Desk

Pride Of Jenni ruled out of Empire Rose
Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) won't be running at Flemington this Saturday. Gareth Hall broke the news on Monday morning, revealing the popular mare was still recovering from her recent infection. "Pride Of Jenni is out of the Empire Rose (Gr.1, 1600m)," Hall said on Giddy Up.
