Coffey cleared to ride Shockletz in Melbourne Cup
Harry Coffey had displayed superhuman powers to get himself up for Tuesday’s Gr.1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).
Incredibly, the multiple Group One-winning jockey will get the chance to place the Melbourne Cup next to his Caulfield Cup (Gr.1, 2400m), after he received the green light to ride Shockletz (NZ) (Shocking) in tomorrow’s 3200-metre Group One at Flemington.
Coffey has been racing the clock to prove his fitness after injuring his collarbone in a fall during Saturday’s Gr.1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.
After being sent to the Royal Melbourne Hospital for scans on Saturday afternoon, Coffey underwent a procedure at the Epworth Hospital on Sunday.
On Monday, Coffey was assessed by his surgeon and Racing Victoria’s chief medical officer, Dr Ben Baressi, who cleared him to ride the Ciaron Maher-trained mare.
At the time of writing, Shockletz was on the third line of Cup betting at $9.50.
Coffey won the Caulfield Cup in 2024 on Maher’s imported gelding Duke De Sessa (Lope De Vega).
