‘As good as ever’: Jenni primed for Feehan hat-trick

The Ciaron Maher-trained Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) kicks off her spring campaign this Sunday at Caulfield, with the four-time Group One winner set to contest the Gr.2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) – a race she has won the past two years.

Maher’s national assistant trainer, Jack Turnbull, said the mare has never been better, which is quite remarkable, give she is now nine years of age and with 48 starts under her belt.

Pride Of Jenni has been working the house down. She placed fourth behind Jigsaw (Manhattan Rain) in an 800-metre jumpout at Cranbourne on August 31, before dominating a 1200-metre jumpout at the same venue on September 14.

“It’s cliché but she’s going as good as ever. Her last jumpout was probably the best we’ve ever seen of her, and she’s just in a really good place,” Turnbull told Racing.com on Monday.

“It would be great for her to go back and win another Feehan and it sets herself up for a big spring.

“She’s made of cast iron.

“She knows her job. She’s got to a point now, given she is a mature-age mare, she’s easier to manage. Early days she was quite hard to train, and fierce in her gallops, but now she’s softened and knows the score.”

Turnbull said Pride Of Jenni may only have a few more starts before being retired, so he and the team will “soak it up”.

“It’s at the stage where you’re just trying to take it in and absorb her brilliance, because this could be her last preparation, we don’t know,” he said.

Pride Of Jenni beat Mr Brightside (NZ) (Bullbars) in the 2024 Feehan Stakes, and the pair have met on several occasions. Lindsay Park’s champion will again square off against her old sparring partner on Sunday, as long as the track isn’t too firm.

Once again, Pride Of Jenni will be aimed towards the Gr.1 Empire Rose Stakes (1600m) – a race she won in 2023 and 2025. The A$1-million event for fillies and mares will be run at Flemington on October 31.

Bred by Trelawney Stud, Pride Of Jenni is out of the O’Reilly mare Sancerre (NZ), who was prepared by Cambridge trainer Tony Pike to win on four occasions for the stud. - racing.com

Star mare Seachange still making her mark

Rising age group star Blind Raise (NZ) (Ace High) continues to add further honours to his already decorated family.

The Oaks Stud-bred and sold three-year-old landed top honours in Saturday’s Gr.3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) to now share favouritism for the upcoming Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

Prepared by expatriate New Zealanders Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, he is a grandson of the Cambridge nursery’s former two-time New Zealand Horse of the Year Seachange (NZ) (Cape Cross).

The daughter of Cape Cross was a seven-time Group One winner in the colours of The Oaks principal Dick Karreman when trained by Ralph Manning.

“She was a freak and is still here in retirement, she’s great and strong as an ox,” The Oaks General Manager Rick Williams said.

“All branches of the Seachange family have been winning, they’re flying at the moment and we’re still breeding from seven or eight of the family, daughters and granddaughters.”

By Ace High, Blind Raise is the second foal of the Darci Brahma mare Away Cruising and has won four of his five starts, with Listed successes in the McKenzie Stakes (1300m) and Anzac Day Stakes (1400m) preceding his Prelude victory.

“He’s an exciting horse and could be the real deal, Trent’s been telling me for some time that he really is,” Williams said.

“He was a beautiful yearling, he was a big, kind horse and has stayed that way. He’s got all the talent, that’s for sure.

“He initially got passed in at Karaka and we thought we might race him, but Trent was always interested and bought him (for $70,000) two or three days later.

“We’re a shareholder in Ace High and he’s building a nice profile as a stallion.”

Away Cruising also has a juvenile brother to Blind Raise, who didn’t make it to New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sale.

“He’s a very similar horse, possibly a bit stronger, but rolled in his paddock and got his feet through the rails and took a whole lot of skin off just a few days before we were going up,” Williams said.

“It was only superficial, but we had to pull him out. Blind Raise hadn’t raced at that stage so he’s worth a lot more now. He’s been broken in and is ready to go and do something.”

Not surprisingly, Busuttin hasn’t been backward in keeping tabs on the colt.

“Trent’s been ringing me and been asking what we’re doing with him, we haven’t decided yet. There’s no hurry, he’ll be an after Christmas two-year-old anyway,” Williams said.

“We’ve got a nice Almanzor colt going to the sales next year out of the mare, who is due to foal to him again next month, but haven’t decided what she will do after that.” - Paul Vettise

Karaka graduate Nonu impresses at Sydney trials

Exciting Karaka graduate Nonu (NZ) (Anamoe) made an immediate impression in his first public appearance, leading throughout to score a dominant three-and-a-half-length victory in Monday’s official two-year-old trials on the Kensington track at Randwick.

The Bjorn Baker-trained colt was purchased for NZ$600,000 from Wentwood Grange’s draft at the 2026 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale at Karaka. He is the first foal out of stakes-winning Pride Of Dubai mare Easifar, who won three races and is a half-sister to South African Group winner Readytogorightnow (More Than Ready).

A son of champion racehorse Anamoe, Nonu travelled strongly under Jason Collett in his 850m heat before putting his rivals away in the straight and stopping the clock at 49.02 seconds.

Jacquinot colt Eagle Jac finished second, with Ole Kirk colt Macho in third.

Baker, who purchased the colt in partnership with Clarke Bloodstock and Ridgmont, admitted they had stretched their budget to secure him but was delighted with what he saw on Monday.

“He’s a really nice horse, he’s got plenty of quality about him,” Baker said.

“We probably went beyond our budget in New Zealand to buy him.

“But Anamoe was a superstar racehorse and I think he’s going to be a superstar stallion.” - NZ Racing Desk

Wilson claims amateur jockey series

Hannah Wilson finished her time as an amateur jockey in the best possible fashion at Te Aroha on Sunday when winning the Duke of Gloucester Cup (2200m), and ultimately the Race Images-sponsored 2026 Amateur Rider Series.

The 23-year-old hoop was sitting two points behind series leader Monique Dey heading into the race and was rapt to claim 10 points when piloting the Kevin Myers-trained So Call Me (NZ) (Sweynesse) to victory in the coveted amateur race, leapfrogging Dey for the title.

“It is a huge race for the amateurs, so I was quite nervous going into it, I really wanted to take it out,” Wilson said.

“I knew I had a good horse underneath me. He was carrying a bit of weight, which I thought might be a bit of trouble, but he’s a really good jumper and his trial coming into it was great too. In the running he gave me such a great feel, he was travelling so well.”

Wilson has been a leading player throughout the series, bagging four wins and three placings from eight starts – far exceeding her expectations when she began her riding career earlier this year.

“It (series win) was a dream from the beginning, so it was so cool to get it,” she said.

“I came into it not expecting much, I just wanted the experience, but I have ridden some good horses along the way that have helped me, so it has been great.”

Wilson was particularly grateful to Myers, who has been a key player in her career to date, having also trained her first winner, Four Square Pete (NZ) (Zed), at Trentham in July.

“He has been amazing, not just in the series but behind the scenes with trials,” Wilson said. “He has been a huge supporter, and I can’t thank him enough for helping me get to where I am now.”

Wilson has designs on commencing her apprenticeship next year and she said the experience she has gained from riding on raceday as an amateur has been invaluable.

“It has given me so much more confidence,” she said. “It has been really nice preparation for my apprenticeship.”

With the amateur series now over, Wilson, who is currently freelance riding at Awapuni, said she will concentrate on the trials in the coming months and aligning herself with a trainer ahead of her apprenticeship.

“I have been really lucky with making some really good connections with the trainers at Awapuni,” she said. “With the probation period, you have to be with a trainer that you are going to sign up with for five months. I was just focussing on this series and in the next week or two I will make my final decision of who I want to sign up with.

“The next intake is in March so I am just going to keep my trial rides up and do as much as I can.”
