Saturday’s Gr.1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick carries some well-timed significance for the NZB National Online Yearling Sale, which concludes on Tuesday from 6 pm.

The 104-lot online catalogue features a three-quarter-sister to the Oaks favourite Ohope Wins (NZ) (Ocean Park), while that filly’s stablemate and Oaks rival Soverato (NZ) (Vadamos) is among an impressive list of graduates that has been built up through the sale’s five-year history.

Soverato was a $10,000 purchase by Simon and Katrina Alexander’s Kasa Bloodstock from Rich Hill Stud’s draft in the 2024 edition of the National Online Yearling Sale.

The Vadamos filly, who now sports the colours of OTI Racing, was on-sold following an eye-catching second at the Waipa trials and has amassed two wins and two placings from six starts, including a second in last Saturday’s Gr.3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m).

The honour roll for the National Online Yearling Sale is headed by Well Written (Written Tycoon), who topped that 2024 sale at $80,000 and has earned over $2.6 million from an unblemished six-start career that includes victories in this season’s Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m), Gr.2 Auckland Guineas (1400m), Gr.2 Soliloquy Stakes (1400m) and the $4 million NZB Kiwi (1500m) and $1.5 million Karaka Millions 3YO (1600m).

Other notable graduates include De Armas (NZ) (Ardrossan), who cost just $16,000 and banked more than $126,000 with a victory in the Listed Counties Challenge Stakes (1100m) and fourth in the Karaka Millions 2YO (1200m) before being sold, along with Gr.2 Eight Carat Classic (1600m) and $9,500 purchase Hitabell (NZ) (Embellish).

A quality catalogue for the 2026 edition of the sale contains plenty of notable pedigree credentials, including the three-quarter-sister to Ohope Wins that is being offered by Haunui Farm.

Catalogued as Lot 87, the filly is by the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks (2400m) winner’s sire Ocean Park and is out of a half-sister to her dam Choux Mania. This filly’s dam Laced Up (NZ) is also a half-sister to Group One winners Miss Wilson (Stratum) and Jimmy Choux. The latter won five Group One races including the New Zealand Derby (2400m) and Rosehill Guineas (2000m), was runner-up in the Cox Plate (2040m) and was New Zealand’s Horse of the Year in 2010-11.

Laced Up is herself the dam of four winners from five foals to race, headed by Gr.3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m) winner Fancify (NZ) (Niagara).

“She’s a three-quarter-sister to Ohope Wins and a lovely filly that’s going to be a very nice prospect for somebody,” Haunui’s managing director Mark Chitty said. “She’s a very nice-moving filly.

“She was a late foal, born on the 23rd of November, so she’s just needed that little bit of extra time to mature, and this online sale has given her that opportunity.

“She’s from a great family and is already a half-sister to a Melbourne Group Three winner in Fancify, and the sire Ocean Park is having an outstanding season.”

The well-related filly is part of a six-strong draft for Haunui Farm, who will also offer a Sword Of State filly (Lot 15), three yearlings by their own former shuttle stallion Ribchester and a colt by Redwood.

“Sword Of State couldn’t have started much better than he has, both with his first two-year-olds on the track and with his yearlings in the sale ring,” Chitty said. “This filly is out of a stakes-winning Savabeel mare, Ray’s Girl (NZ), who also ran fourth in the New Zealand Oaks. She’s left five winners already from six foals to race.

“This is a really nice, athletic filly. We never really thought about preparing her for Karaka, but the owner decided to take advantage of this opportunity with the online sale. It’s developed into a really good sale, and I think one of the advantages is that these horses never really have that pressure put on them in the spring. They’re left to grow out and develop. There have been some terrific horses coming out of the sale in recent years and hopefully that will continue.

“We’re also selling some really nice yearlings by Ribchester. Although we didn’t stand him here last season, he’s got some promising horses coming through. We’ve seen some two-year-olds this season with really good ability (including recent winners Ronaldo (NZ) (Ribchester) and Belle Rebelle (NZ) (Ribchester)), and I think there will be more to come.

“I particularly like the filly out of Fullinbloom (NZ) (Lot 67). The mare has had only two to the races, the Group Two performer Whiskey ‘n Roses (NZ) (Belardo) and the talented filly Ruby Rush (NZ) (Ribchester), who both still have plenty of racing promise ahead of them. This filly is a chestnut, like most of the family has been, and she’s a beautiful mover.”

Sires represented include the likes of Proisir, Per Incanto, Alabama Express, Ocean Park, Toronado, Shocking, Contributer, Satono Aladdin, So You Think, Profondo, Almanzor, Hellbent, Ace High and Sword Of State. - NZ Racing Desk

Savabeel heads Waikato Stud 2026 roster

From proven producers to exciting young sires on the rise, Waikato Stud’s 2026 roster offers breeders proven performance, emerging momentum and genuine depth across the board through Savabeel, his sire son Noverre, Ardrossan, Ocean Park, Banquo and the exciting new recruit in the unbeaten Group One-winning juvenile, Return To Conquer.

“It’s a lineup we are incredibly proud of, and one we are proud to show clients. It also reflects the long-term thinking and tradition that has played such a big part in our success,” said general manager, Mike Rennie.

“We know how hard it is to make a stallion and, even more so these days, to acquire one. This year has been big for Waikato Stud and our partners, with Coolmore purchasing Super Seth, and three generations of the Chittick family investing in Return To Conquer. At the end of the day though, we can’t do it without the support of our fellow breeders and current shareholders.”

Crowned New Zealand Champion Sire on ten occasions and inducted into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame in 2025, Savabeel has made an extraordinary contribution to the Australasian industry.

This year, his book will be set to private, with Waikato Stud and his loyal shareholders the only breeders with access to the breed-shaping influence.

“What more can you say about a stallion who has achieved so much?” said Rennie.

“Sav still enjoys his work and he looks great. While he’s set at private, on the track he’s certainly not done yet. Belle Cheval (NZ) (Savabeel) was incredibly impressive in the Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes, and on Saturday in Australia, Essentric Nature (NZ) (Savabeel) recorded his 158th stakes winner. He’s closing in on Zabeel’s record of 166 stakes winners and we’re confident he’ll get there. That’ll be another good milestone to tick off for Sav.”

Rennie played an integral role in the successful career of Super Seth and, alongside the Chittick family and WS team, will now help lay the foundations for the career of another exciting addition to Waikato Stud’s stallion roster in Return To Conquer.

“Return To Conquer is an incredible horse to look at and many will remember him from Magic Millions being a A$1.3 million yearling. He’s an unbeaten Group One-winning son of Snitzel, who we know is working with the NZ broodmare band,” Rennie said.

“All four of his starts were at stakes level and he’ll get a lot of mares from the Waikato broodmare band as well as shareholders. He’s phenomenal value when you consider his breeding, his looks and what he did on the racetrack.”

Return To Conquer will stand for $15,000 plus GST.

Ardrossan, the Group-winning son of Redoute’s Choice, looks poised to soar. Striking at an impressive 8% stakes winners to runners, Ardrossan’s momentum continued through the 2026 yearling sales, where his biggest crop to date made up to $450,000. Seventeen of his yearlings sold for six figures, while 60 per cent of his NZB Karaka yearlings was secured by international buyers.

Among those to invest in Ardrossan yearlings were Bjorn Baker, Ciaron Maher, Cliff Brown, Matt Laurie, Sheamus Mills, the Shailer Racing team, loyal local supporters Wexford Stables and ready-to-run consignor Ohukia Lodge to name but a few.

“Ardy’s a sire we believe is going to kick some serious goals in the coming seasons. What he’s been able to achieve so far has been from a lower profile of mare, which is phenomenal. The last three seasons, that quality has increased a significant amount, and we saw that in the sales ring this year,” Rennie said.

“They’re tough, Hong Kong love them, he’s had 12 runners for eight winners, the ready-to-run consigners honed in on them at the yearling sales this year. It was trainers versus ready-to-run consignors bidding against each other most of the time.”

Ardrossan has already produced two stakes performers from his current two-year-old crop in De Armas (NZ) (Ardrossan) and Butler Cabin (NZ) (Ardrossan) from just two runners to date, and he will stand this season for $20,000 plus GST.

Ocean Park has had a watershed season producing 78 individual winners for 10 stakes horses, including two Group One horses. The five-time Group One winner, a Champion in both Australia and New Zealand during his racing career, is underpinned by consistency throughout his career as a racehorse and now as a sire, Ocean Park has produced 1038 race wins from 379 winners, across distances that range from 1200m to 3200m. He has sired five individual Group One winners, with 26 black-type winners in total.

“He’s always got a good, tough horse, and Ohope Wins (NZ) (Ocean Park) is a great example of that this season,” Rennie said.

“As is Autumn Glory (NZ) (Ocean Park), who placed in the New Zealand Derby and Oaks. They’re good trainers’ horses because they enjoy their work, they’re tough and they train on. Look at Kovalica (NZ) (Ocean Park) who is six-years old and raced 37 times, he’s still contesting those black-type races, he’s amassed A$4,390,250 prizemoney over in Australia for Chris Waller, who bought two of his five yearlings at Karaka with John O’Shea and Tom Charlton and Ballymore being the others.”

Ocean Park was renowned for his remarkable toughness and enduring soundness; qualities which he has undoubtedly passed to his progeny and will stand for $15,000 plus GST.

Noverre’s eldest are two-year-olds, but it is the three-year-old season Waikato Stud believes we will start to see his progeny make their mark. At the 2026 yearling sales, trainers continued to have confidence in the Group One-winning son with Moody Racing going to $200,000, other trainers included Lindsay Park, Grahame Begg and Wexford.

“It wouldn’t surprise us to see them step out as spring three-year-olds and really make a mark,” said Rennie. “Reports from trainers are they’re straightforward and will benefit from a bit of time, and it was good to see trainers securing the Noverres again at the yearling sales.”

Noverre will stand for $10,000 plus GST this season.

At just nine-years old, Banquo is a stallion who is having to prove himself the hard way. From seven runners he has produced three winners, including the Group Three-winning two-year-old Justin Case (NZ) (Banquo) who, from four starts, has won twice, placed and ran fourth in the Gr.1 Sistema Stakes. Banquo hails from a strong Australian sprinting family, being a full brother to Gr.1 Oakleigh Plate winner Booker (Written Tycoon). A good-looking son of Written Tycoon, he was a A$600,000 Magic Millions yearling who produces good-looking stock.

“Banquo’s progeny are showing us real promise, headlined by Justin Case who has risen through the grades quickly and will make an exciting three-year-old,” said Rennie. “Current three-year-olds Portland (NZ) (Banquo) and Mr Bombasa (NZ) (Banquo), who won on Monday, look to be workmen-like too. The feedback we are getting from people like Jamie Beatson of Ohukia and Kris Shailer is that they love them.”

Banquo will stand for an increased fee of $5,000 plus GST.
