Pride Of Jenni springs Hollindale surprise

The complexion of this Saturday's Gr.2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) changed on Monday when Pride Of Jenni (Pride Of Dubai) was confirmed for the $500,000 feature.

The popular mare is among 20 nominations for the Gold Coast event, which also includes the past two Melbourne Cup winners, Knight's Choice (Extreme Choice) and Half Yours (St Jean).

The 1800-metre contest will be Pride Of Jenni's first since a fifth placing in the Gr.1 Queen Of The Turf (1600m) at Randwick on April 11 and owner Tony Ottobre said the way she had done since that race was what convinced he and trainer Ciaron Maher to head to Queensland.

"It was never the plan, we were always going to give her the three runs in the autumn, which were some very high-level races," Ottobre told SENTrack.

"She came out of those three runs a treat so we thought it'd probably be wise just to keep her ticking over while she was semi-spelling at Bong Bong Farm, which is in New South Wales, and the news coming back to me was that she was pretty keen and happy to keep going.

"It would have been remiss of us not to take her to Queensland and let the Queensland public have a look at this fantastic, beautiful animal that's won Horse of the Year go around and hopefully do her thing where she can get out to a margin and stretch them and make it all exciting."

Provided she performs up to expectations this weekend, Pride Of Jenni will progress to the Gr.1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 23.

Her only Queensland appearance came in last year's Doomben Cup, in which she finished 10th.

Pride Of Jenni's Queen Of The Turf fifth placing followed a narrow second to Light Infantry Man (Fast Company) in the Gr.1 Australian Cup (2000m), having resumed with a third placing in the Gr.1 All-Star Mile (1600m).

Pride Of Jenni joined She's A Hustler (NZ) (Ace High) on the $5 second line of Hollindale Stakes betting after it was confirmed she would be running, behind only Half Yours, who is at $2.25. – RAS Newswire

Queensland Group One still on colt’s rada

A trip to the Queensland winter carnival remains in the mix for talented colt Excite (Wootton Bassett) but the immediate focus is on another domestic black-type target.

The Roger James and Robert Wellwood-trained son of Wootton Bassett continued his rise when he accounted for stablemate Incandescent in Saturday’s Listed Waikato Equine Veterinary Services Stakes (1400m) at Te Rapa.

Excite will now run in the Listed Cloudsoft Accounting Champagne Stakes (1600m) on May 16 before a decision is made on a trip to Australia.

“He’ll definitely run in the mile at Ellerslie and we’ll just watch Incandescent (NZ) (Per Incanto) for the next two or three days, he’ll either go there or to the paddock,” James said.

“I nominated Excite this morning for the JJ Atkins (Gr.1, 1600m), if he strung another one together impressively then we’d be inclined to think, all going well, we’d have a go.”

Prior to his Te Rapa success, Excite had finished runner-up in his first two appearances before a luckless fourth in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Trentham.

“He’s learning his trade and grew up a bit more after his trip to Wellington, he should have run second in the Sires without a doubt,” James said.

Meanwhile, older stablemate and last-start Gr.3 King’s Plate winner Sweynesday (NZ) (Sweynesse) will head across the Tasman later today to make his Australian debut on Saturday ahead of a possible tilt at the Gr.1 Stradbroke Handicap (Gr.1, 1400m).

“Sweynesday will run in the Takeover Target (Listed, 1200m) at Gosford on Saturday and Solid Gold goes over a week later,” James said.

The filly booked her trip with success in the Gr.3 Championship Stakes (2100m).

“We might run her in the Rough Habit (Gr.3, 2000m) and then that gives us three weeks into the Queensland Oaks (Gr.1, 2200m), she is just thriving,” James said.

Closer to home, four-time Australian winner Grinzinger Moon (Puissance de Lune) will debut for the stable at Ellerslie on Wednesday in the Auckland Co-Op Taxis (1200m).

“She came across to be mated at Windsor Park but didn’t get in foal so she had been out of work for about nine months when we got her,” James said.

“She has trialled up well and she’ll be an interesting prospect. If she does handle an off track, we might have a bit of fun with her in the winter.”

Three-year-olds The Spaniard (NZ) (Almanzor) (trackside.co.nz, 2100m), Pre Nup (NZ) (Contributer) (Entain/NZB Insurance Pearl Series, 1400m) and Lydiard Park (Wootton Bassett) (Eagle Technology Maiden, 1500m) will also be in action.
