Apprentice jockey Zubair Bholah picked up his first win in New Zealand on Wednesday when he rode Flicka of Gold to victory in the Clair Anderton (1400m) at Wingatui for boss Steve Tyler.
The nine-year-old gelding jumped well from the ace barrier and Bholah made it a staying test for the 12 horse field, setting a strong pace throughout to win by six lengths.
“I judged the pace and it paid off,” said Bholah, who previously rode in Mauritius.
“It was a big stress (trying to get my first winner), but now I feel the pressure has now gone.
“I am very happy, it is my first win here in New Zealand. I have to thank the Tyler family, they have helped me a lot, along with Mr (David) Walsh my riding master.
“It is a good experience to be here in New Zealand, I am very happy.”
