Inglewood owner-trainer Marilyn Paewai is hopeful her bonny mare Rosewood can land some richly deserved Group success this weekend.
The five-year-old daughter of Redwood has won five races this preparation and will be reunited with jockey Lisa Allpress when she contests Saturday’s Gr.3 Rich Hill Stud Taranaki Breeders’ Stakes (1400m).
“I think there is a bit of an affinity between her and Lisa,” Paewai said.
“Lisa knows she likes to get back, she doesn’t panic and then she flies home.”
With the Hawera track rated a Dead4 on Friday morning, Paewai said she was pleased to see some rain in the Taranaki region given her mare had notched eight of her nine career victories on heavy tracks.
Paewai is mindful this will be Rosewood’s tenth start of the campaign, but said it was hard to turn her out while she was thriving.
“She is just bouncing out of her skin, especially for a horse that has been up for six months,” Paewai said.
“Depending on how she performs on Saturday, we would look at the Jakkalberry Classic (Listed, 1950m) or the Thompson Handicap (Gr.3, 1600m) before sending her for a spell.”
Having trained since the late 80s, Paewai works her team of three horses at the New Plymouth track these days.
Paewai, who purchased Rosewood as a weanling for just $4,000 from Bradbury Park’s 2014 New Zealand Bloodstock weanling draft, said the mare was special to her and her equine veterinarian husband, Ray.
“She is a bit of a character and it is a really good feeling buying something as a weanling for that amount of money and to have won nearly $200,000 in prizemoney.
“She is the best horse we have had, she is only five and has won nine races. She is pretty special.
With black-type care of a third placing in last year’s Gr.3 Metric Mile (1550m), Paewai is keen to see Rosewood add a stakes victory to her record.
“I would really like to get a Group Three for her,” she said.
“She has been pretty consistent and we feel she deserves that recognition. It’s not about the money, it’s just for that status. It would be nice.” – NZ Racing Desk
