Otaki conditioner Johno Benner, who trains in partnership with Hollie Wynyard, was pleased with both of his runners performances in the Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) on Saturday and can’t wait until the next two days of the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival.
Wyndspelle dead-heated for sixth place with pacemaker Ocean Emperor, while Scott Base made up ground late from the rear of the field to finish eighth.
“It was sensational (Scott Base’s run), I’m really happy,” Benner said. “We were coming to Hastings, with both horses, knowing that we’d be finding the line, if we could do that we would be rapt.
“I’m very happy, 21 days – bring it on.”
While Benner thinks Scott Base is suited to the mile distance of the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m) on September 22, where he is a $6 favourite on the TAB’s futures market, he said Wyndspelle would be more competitive on the final day of the carnival in the Gr.1 Livamol Classic (2040m).
“I can’t wait until the last day with him (Wyndspelle). I think the next day (Windsor Park Plate) will be similar. But he got caught up in a bit of traffic just at the wrong time. He was good to the line as well, so I’m happy with both horses.”
