Northland breeding and racing stalwart Les Donaldson has died.
He established Totara Park Stud in the 1960s and, among others, stood Bandmaster with the former champion three-year-old Uncle Remus his most famous son.
He was raced by Donaldson’s mother Grace and Kim Clotworthy and was the New Zealand Horse of the Year in 1977-78 to earn his sire Bandmaster and his dam Tusitala leading stallion and broodmare honours.
The stud is now run by his daughter Nicci and her husband Dirk Oberholster.
Donaldson was a committee member of the Whangarei Racing Club and served as president before he was made a life member.
He was also patron from 2008 until 2017.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, three children and five grandchildren.
Donaldson’s funeral will be held at Newberrys Funeral Home on February 2 at 1.30pm.
